The Household Borax Alternative That Is Legal in the UK
Pure borax can no longer be sold for home use in the UK, so this is what we recommend for the washing machine and the kitchen sink. Our borax substitute is a mineral blend of 55% sodium bicarbonate and 45% sodium carbonate, the same chemistry as sodium sesquicarbonate. It softens hard water, lifts grease and neutralises odours without chlorine, phosphates, dyes or fragrance.
How to use it
- Laundry booster: add about 30g (1½ tablespoons) to the drum alongside your usual detergent. Ideal in hard-water areas.
- Unscented detergent: use 30–45g on its own for a fragrance-free wash for sensitive skin and baby clothes.
- Whitening soak: dissolve 30g in 4 litres of warm water and soak greying whites or towels for 30–60 minutes before washing.
- Softer rinse: pair with 50–100ml of white vinegar in the softener drawer.
- Dishwasher refresher: sprinkle 15g in the base of the machine; mix 2:1 with citric acid for a homemade dishwasher powder.
- Surface scrub: apply to a damp cloth for sinks, hobs and tiles, then rinse.
